What were the earliest .edu domain names?

Domain names in the .edu TLD sorted by creation date:

• edu.dates.txt = 1,588 .edu domains registered before August 1995
• hbcu.dates.txt = 101 HBCUs active in 2020

Sources

According to the 2013 DNS Census, there were 6,749 domains registered in the edu TLD, approximately one-nine-thousandth the number of dot-coms (61.3 million).

The National Center for Education Statistics currently lists 101 HBCUs.

Background

June 2018: I came across a fun hack by Frederic Cambus to identify the oldest domains with com, net, and ord TLDs. Playing around with his bash scripts, I added the oldest dot-edu domains.

August 2020: Woke up in the middle of the night wondering which of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) was the first to register a domain name so I created a separate file for the HBCUs.
